Dr. Oz is a Cleveland-born health expert who received his undergraduate education from Harvard University. He received his MD and MBA in 1986 University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton Business School. He has received a Daytime Emmy twice and his show, the Dr. Oz show, has received a Daytime Emmy three times. He is Professor of Surgery and Vice-Chair at Columbia University. At New York Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Oz is in charge of the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program. Most of his research concerns issues of the heart, including heart replacement surgery, minimally-invasive heart surgery, and health care policy. Throughout his life, Dr. Oz has written over 400 publications, as well as written book chapters and authored medical books. He performs over a hundred heart surgeries per year. He has won the Gross Surgical Research Scholarship and was voted “doctor of the year” by Hippocrates magazine. Dr. Oz was born in Ohio and raised in Delaware.
Currently he resides in New Jersey with his wife and four children. The accomplishments of Dr. Oz are many, but I would like to zero in on his role in the weight loss industry specifically. Since weight loss supplements can range in level of quality, effectiveness, price, safety, and usefulness, it is very helpful to have a man who is a health care expert give his take on which weight loss supplements out there are the most health-conscious and worthwhile options. Healthcare supplements can be counter-productive unless we are well informed, and thankfully a health care expert has done the research for us. Combining Dr. Oz’s knowledge of the heart and the human body with the assessment of which weight loss supplements out there are the best options for us has resulted in three popular options: hcg, green coffee beans, and garcinia cambogia.
The HCG diet involves taking a hormone (human chorionic gonadotropin) in addition to having a very low-calorie diet. This controversial diet claims to help people lose up to a pound a day. The diet itself is responsible for the weight loss, while the weight loss supplement (HCG) is responsible for how the weight is lost. The HCG is either injected or taken orally in the form of liquid drops. The HCG helps to suppress appetite and make it so that you are not very hungry while consuming 500 calories a day. HCG is an FDA-approved drug. While it is quite controversial, this route has been a successful one for many. One thing that is important to remember is that the HCG hormone must be used under the supervision of a doctor. There are some over the counter HCG products available and these are to be avoided. So, if you are going to use HCG to help you lose weight, you should make sure that you have a prescription for it and are not buying it over the counter. Some side effects of HCG to look out for are: bloating (mild), stomach-pelvic pain, and nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea (which are less common).
Green Coffee Beans
Green coffee beans are raw beans of Coffea fruits. Coffee’s effects on weight loss can be credited to the chlorogenic acid, quinides, lignans, and trigonelline, which have been shown to have a positive effect on glycemic control. Various studies suggest that chlorogenic acid slows down the absorption of fat from food intake. The most recent study dealt with a group of 16 overweight adults who were given two different levels of extract from chlorogenic acid. The study was published in 2012 in the Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, and Obesity journal. The subjects lost an average of almost 18 pounds. Possible negative side effects of green coffee beans include: insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, and increased heart and breathing rate.
Garcinia cambogia is a natural plant extract that has shown to contribute to weight loss. One study following 60 obese people for 8 weeks found that with a calorie-restricted diet combined with garcinia cambogia, the experimental group reported an average weight loss of about 14 pounds as well as a decrease in appetite. Garcinia cambogia (or HCA) is likely safe in normal amounts and should be avoided if one is pregnant or breastfeeding. The way this extract works is by sending signals to your brain that you are full. The extract will help send these signals faster than your brain would normally send them, so you stop eating before you normally would. Since you do not feel as hungry as usual and get full faster than usual, you lose weight more quickly than you would with diet and exercise alone. An important thing to remember when buying Garcinia Cambogia is to look for products that list at least 50% HCA content. Possible side effects are: nausea, digestive tract discomfort, and headache.
